When I first started working on my Graphic Design program, I really struggled with letting the professional side take control of my designs. I was just so excited to be back in an artistic field that it was like unleashing a kid in a candy store. Every new program was something new to explore and I wanted to know everything. This issue is that I went from a fine arts setting at Arcadia University where I could design and create literally anything. There were very few restrictions so I found myself creating things I wanted to make. I had never stopped to think about how my work could be marketable or how I may have to one day, create something based on a client’s own requirements.
So, when I started in my new program it was like a smack to the face as I suddenly had “clients” and they had expectations. This was no longer about me and what I wanted to do, rather it was about what I could do for them. While it may have been a whirlwind in the beginning, I certainly looked at it as a new and fun challenge for myself. Now, I am not only completing my program with the “clients” in mind, but I have even begun taking on personal projects for my own clients outside of SNHU.
