Magazine Layout Project

The Prompt:

Design a 2-page magazine spread for an article using principles of typography.

Original Layout Design

The project challenged my newly learned understanding of typography and software manipulation. Choosing typefaces and imagery that paired well together, making the article legible, and creating an interesting and captivating spread was a tough yet enticing puzzle. This project tested my knowledge of InDesign and basic typography principles such as kerning, leading, and justification along with visual hierarchy and emphasis.

I chose imagery that matched the philosophical wonder of the article. I then proceeded to choose a sans-serif typeface that set a futuristic tone for the headings and paired it with a serif typeface to remain legible and fit with the philosophy of the writing. Making the image fill the entire magazine spread achieved a feeling of looking into the vastness of space, a perfect setting for the questioning of intelligent life in the universe. In order to maintain legibility, my text needed to be white against the dark background. However, the stars in the background began to make it a bit less legible, so I implemented transparent blocks around my text to allow for a darker background for the text while still allowing the text to be read.

In reworking this project, I took the advice of a fellow classmate and fixed the boxes around the text so as not to have as much negative space in them. I did this by cutting them short instead of running them against the rock arch for their full length.
