Past Work

This animation pairs with the magazine advertisement I also chose in the previous milestone. This assignment was made using photoshop and I feel shows my knowledge using the software with the placement of different visual elements like the logo, beach and text. I figured out a special font with creative elements to make it fit the theme of a “tropical island” and the attention to detail to include the website at the bottom of the ad. I followed critiques very well as from the initial concept, this design looked much worse and had no direction. Using advice from my peers and professor I found new images and chose the same colors so everything could follow a similar theme. In the end I feel this is a successful design that showcases my advanced knowledge with creating animated banners for websites because the design has also been exported to be website safe, following the correct color patterns and is not a high resolution design so it can load quickly on the page.

This design used my advanced knowledge of Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop and I feel showcases my skills through use of typography, images and color scheme. Line was used to help separate larger text from each other as well as shapes and images. Sticking with the resort’s color scheme, I was able to successfully use each color and form a balanced design. I feel I spent a long time brainstorming and creating multiple renditions of this magazine ad before arriving at this final design. Listening to peers I changed the oval shapes and spaced them evenly amongst one another, then changed the large purple rectangle with body text into more of a square as a way to balance the palm trees and typography. The attention to detail such as the little spacers indicating the crystal logo of the resort, helps form a more well rounded theme and makes the design more appealing to look at. The design is print ready and readable at many sizes, I feel that accuracy of the color corresponds to print fairly well.

I believe I used advanced technical skills to create this design, creating a solid base mesh in Maya and then further modeling and texturing the object in Mudbox and finally rendering it to be game ready in Unreal Engine. I feel I used proper elements of design, using lines to build the shape of the dagger, color and texture to get the metal reflections and damascus look onto the object. The depth of knowledge in order to successfully implement the shaders and textures and to form a balanced object that looks the same on both sides takes a lot of skill, research and experimentation. I spent a lot of time exploring each software in order to become familiar and comfortable, having to restart and troubleshoot many times before finally feeling confident in the final result. I feel I demonstrated proper critiquing skills, especially when asking for help when I ran into a problem. I think I adhered to all the given directions and created a successful game-ready 3D object. By also providing screenshots of my progress, it also helps show where I started, where peers gave feedback and how my design changed throughout the course. I feel I spent a lot of time constructing this 3D model and getting the damascus texture and the metal reflection to correctly display were the most difficult. In the end I feel there is a lot of detail in this design and I wish there could be a way to display the full 3D model so people can spin it around and see for themselves.

The brand idea was based on a covenant from a video game and mixed with a popular cereal brand. The intricacy of knowledge from the video game and being able to pair with something that of pop culture I feel offers a lot of knowledge in being able to connect the dots and create something new. The design was made using photoshop and showcases a lot of different transformations and effects that demonstrate my advanced knowledge in the software. There are a lot of elements and principles identified in this design however the ones that stand out to me most are shape, white space, color and value. The shapes from the large and small objects that help create a hierarchy of where to look along with the yellow right in the middle to direct the eyes and the space plus negative space of the silhouette really helps break up the design and offer balance to the large shape on the left. I feel I followed criticism from peers and my professor because my initial design felt a lot more blocky and did not utilize any background space, incorporating the second design of the sun really helped create a balanced design and changing colors to a purple that helped create a contrast that makes the yellow really stand out. I feel this design is successful and well crafted, I spent a lot of time adding lighting and shadow effects to create an enamel pin design that I think is my favorite part of the design and really helps showcase the different kinds of items this business might sell.

I used only Adobe Illustrator to create this entire design suite so I think this project helps showcase my advanced knowledge about the software. I used lines to outline each shape in order to give the impression of animals, I sketched out on paper multiple designs and picked the one that I felt suited the company the best. I thought my choice of color really helped identify the “holistic” part of the clinic with the different shades of teal while also staying calming and welcoming. I created multiple rough drafts and used different variations of color just to experiment and see what might work and what doesn’t and that is also showcased within the design suite. I followed critiques from my peers and professor regarding making changes and I felt they greatly helped with the overall design, such as changing the font to feel more professional and consistent across all text as well as adding variation of color to the logo instead of a plain black and white or single color design. I feel my attention to detail is there within this design, such as for the “claws” part of the business, I added a parrot and bunny to indicate that they also take care of exotic pets as well as cats and dogs. This design is vectorized and the design suite contains multiple print ready designs such as a letterhead and business card so I feel it can successfully be deliverable for print and on screen.

Using Autodesk Maya, I feel this choice helps show my knowledge of using this advanced software. The design consists of Pepe, a pre-rigged, fully unique looking character provided by the class and my goal was to create a walking animation and other movements like backflips and punches. I felt this walking animation looked the cleanest and offered a bounce that adds character. The camera pans in a 360 degree circle to get every angle of the walking animation and the stage and lighting help build the scene to showcase my animation. The way Pepe bobs to the side and bounces with each step I feel helps show an attention to detail with the way personality and character can be shown within a simple walk.

The design was also made using Procreate so I feel this helps with my ability to adapt to different programs while still creating a successful design. The elements of design I am able to immediately identify are line, color, space and texture and I feel offer an in depth knowledge of how to use these elements and principles in more of a general scale. The texture of the trees, grass and house all give way to the multiple brushes and pencils used to build this rough and sketchy design. Following a similar monochromatic color scheme as the other design, this one uses more of a brownish-yellow to indicate dead grass. I feel I used a substantial amount of time brainstorming because we had to create 6 different thumbnail sketches and pick the best two and enhance them. I felt my two designs were fairly effective at showcasing the house and the spooky or uneasy feeling it gives off from reading the story. I feel I followed critiques from my peers and professor by changing the font to be more readable. Before I wanted to somehow weave the text into the branches however upon execution all my feedback said it was unreadable, so changing that really helped with the overall design.

Based on a short story, the short story chosen is “The Shunned House ” by H.P. Lovecraft. It is supposed to entice the reader or promote a call to action while containing visuals that can be identified from the short story. The entire drawing was made with Procreate on the Ipad so if anything, this design helps showcase my drawing skills and knowledge of using different brushes and blending and overall design elements. I thought a monochromatic color scheme would help make this piece feel a little more scary so I chose a mossy green to indicate a paranormal mist emanating from the basement. I thought the balance of the staircase would help create a narrow passageway and squeeze the viewer into paying attention to the smaller elements within the drawing. I created many variations of advertisements for The Shunned House and narrowed down my designs to two final pieces and I chose this out out of the two as I felt the cramped staircase gives more of a claustrophobic feeling and that to me is more of an indicator for an eerie or uneasy feeling. I listened to my peers and professor by adding more values on the walls and staircase to help push the walls of the basement back, while using some of the smoke to help guide the viewer’s eyes towards the text and other shapes in the drawing. The design is not vectorized but it is drawn on an 8.5” x 11” artboard so that would be the maximum size this design could be printed or displayed at while retaining the same quality.

I feel I used proper technical skills to create this design that shows my knowledge of the graphic design software Adobe Illustrator. The entire design is vectorized so it is capable of being scaled to any size while keeping the same high quality and the use of typography to form the shape of Bill Murray’s head is an indicator to how technical warping each work can be. I used no color as a way to focus more on the values but I did use line, space and shape to create negative and positive space that revealed the face. I spend the most time brainstorming and experimenting how and where to place each word, creating a list of key characters, quotes or films that all relate to the actor Bill Murray. I feel I demonstrated appropriate critiquing skills and was capable of implementing suggestions provided by my peers and professor. Some of those suggestions were to create more negative space, angle and curve the words more so they don’t just sit horizontal or vertical and change some of the font colors to gray in order to break up some of the contrast that was just black and white. I felt as if I followed the directions and specifications of the assignment and created a successful design that showcases my creativity and skills of the Illustrator software. I think there is a lot of attention to detail here with the many different sizes, shapes and colors of the typography that forms into the shape of a recognizable face. The design is print ready for any size and deliverable for screen publication as well.

The animation was made using Adobe Animate and I feel it helps show my knowledge in this software with the way I was able to keyframe multiple objects, utilize framing knowledge to build new scenes and implement sound and clickable buttons. The line, color, and shapes used all helped build a balanced scene and the change of scenes to the arrow flying through the air helps show emphasis on an object and forms a nice contrast to all the negative space behind the arrow. From the initial concept to what I was able to create I feel I came a long way, the rough draft of a few slides to a fully developed animation with sound is evidence of my craftsmanship and attention to detail within this project. Since this is an interactive animation via HTML, being able to click any of the buttons is not possible at the moment so I exported the video to .mp4.
